Spies by chance (pl. Szpiedzy z przypadku, fr. Espions par hasard, wek. Kémek véletlenül, jap. 偶然のスパイ [Gūzen no supai], esp. Spionoj akcidente) – Polish-Hungarian-French-Canadian-Japanese animated series, produced by Procyon Lotor Entertainment, based on books published by Par Le Fer & Par Le Feu, broadcast on Procyon Lotor TV.

The series is kept in a style somewhat reminiscent of pseudo-documentaries, e.g. due to the narrator, subtitles indicating the place, time, and personal data of the characters, and information given at the end about the further fate of the characters (especially those convicted).

Plot description[]

The main characters are two friends who initially work as cleaners in a detective agency in the town of Glykalibopolis, and then are retrained as real detectives. It is not always an easy job, and their assignments sometimes take on a rather trivial, and sometimes even serious form.

Rules of the series[]

In order to avoid any potential inconsistencies in the worldbuilding, the series has certain rules, from which exceptions are unlikely:

  • Only carnivores and omnivores are sapient (and even then not always) – thanks to this, all the characters can eat meat and there is no need to worry that it is taken from intelligent creatures;
  • The action does not take place in our world or in something that could be called a variation on it - i.e. there are no things from our world that have their own names in our world (such as countries, monuments, cities, etc.) – so if the characters do something legally that is not legal in Poland (or some other country, depending on where the recipient is at the time), then it is simply "not our country, so the law may differ somehow".
  • When the water creatures are out of the water, they have masks filled with water over their breathing holes, as well as microphones with speakers (but not over their mouths, because they have to eat somehow). When they speak, the movement of their mouths (rather) does not match what they are saying.
  • (Rather) we shouldn't count on intelligent snakes or ungulates – if only because it would be difficult for them to catch anything, and this would definitely make it difficult for them to function in a civilized society, etc.

Characters[]

  • Grashpirion “Grashpy” Effervesqend[2] – a red panda, the best friend of Solby. His domain is more action than planning. Hot-tempered. Like Solby, his birthday is June 21st.
