Legion of Super Heroes is an American adult-animated superhero-comedy television series created by Harry Vallet for the streaming service Max. It centers on Kara Zor-El, the cousin of Kal-El (aka "Superman"), who is enrolled in Legion Academy, a prestigiously dedicated school for superheroes in training. Although an American adaptation of the Japanese anime My Hero Academia, all art and animation, as well as all visual effects, come from Star Trek: Lower Decks, hence the quote "From the makers of Star Trek: Lower Decks...".
Story[]
Kara Zor-El is a tomboyish teenage Kryptonian who lives on the planet Krypton in her hometown of Argo City. Her mother, General Alura Zor-El of the Kryptonian Defense Force, has been preparing for a catastrophe her brother-in-law Jor-El has predicted will destroy the planet. However, the disaster strikes early, and Alura has just enough time to send her daughter Kara to Earth, where she is supposed to reunite with her younger cousin Kal-El, who is to arrive in his own escape ship. Just after take-off, the shockwave of the planet’s explosion causes Kara's pod to be thrown off course, putting her into suspended animation and sending the vessel into a trajectory that arrives on Earth two decades and a half later, where Kal-El becomes the most powerful man in the universe, Superman!
25 years later after her arrival, Kara currently resides at Kent Farm in her foster hometown of Smallville, Kansas, where she idolizes her own cousin and wants to be a hero just like Superman. On Thanksgiving, Superman, and the Justice League (who Superman is the leader of) are invited to Kent Farm for a dinner party hosted by Kara’s foster aunt, Martha Kent, where Kara pesters Superman into letting her join the Justice League, but Superman gently refuses to take Kara with her due to her being too young and yet to start school. Suddenly, the Legion of Doom led by Lex Luthor enters Martha’s bar where the Justice League’s thanksgiving dinner party is taking place and demands eggnog, only to learn that the entire bar is out of stock. Suddenly, when Superman offers Luthor the last bottle of eggnog, he responds by smashing it on Superman’s head as an act of retaliation. Superman claims the act a party foul, having Green Lantern clean up the mess, only for one of the Legion of Doom, Cheetah, to break some more dishes with her claws before the Legion leaves. Afterwards, the Justice League laughs at Superman’s humiliation, but Kara is angry at Superman for not standing up for himself. Storming out of the house to let off some steam, Kara unleashes a piercing scream which shatters all the windows in the house, inadvertently exposing her Kryptonian powers in the process much to everyone’s horror and Superman’s disgrace.
A month later, on Christmas Eve, the Legion of Doom returns to Kent Farm’s bar where Kara and Martha are talking about last month’s incident and demand eggnog. As soon as the drinks are served, the Legion of Doom begin cracking jokes about Superman, triggering Kara’s rage and causing Martha to alert the mayor, George Dean, that Kara is being kidnapped by the Legion of Doom after picking a fight with them. Luthor initially plans to sell Kara to a circus after discovering her Kryptonian powers, but then decides to kill her with a shard of Kryptonite for turning down his offer. Suddenly, Superman and his Justice League appear, and when one of Luthor’s apostles, Captain Cold, threatens Superman with his absolute-zero ray gun, one of the Justice League, Green Lantern, copies Captain Cold’s weapon and freezes him. Superman then states that he can accept an insult toward him but will not forgive anyone who harms his relatives like Kara. Superman’s right-hand man, Batman, then overpowers the rest of the Legion of Doom singlehandedly, though Luthor manages to escape with Kara in tow by throwing a smoke bomb; Luthor takes Kara out to sea on his yacht, the Gertrude, which he kicks Kara off to watch her drown to death, only to be eaten alive by a great white shark that then targets Kara when Aquaman, one of the Justice League, saves her in the nick of time to scare the shark away with his aquatic telepathy. Aquaman praises Kara for standing up for Superman, but Kara tears up when she discovers that the shark ate one of Aquaman’s hands while he is saving her; unfazed by his injury, Aquaman states it as a small price to pay for Kara’s safety and will replace his left hand with a hook.
On Christmas Day, Kara is accepted to Legion Academy, a training school for superheroes in training located in Neo Metropolis in the 31st century, as Superman’s gift to her after recognizing her potential from fighting against the Legion of Doom alone in his honor. After taking her to the 31st century, Superman promises to meet his cousin again after graduation, leaving a tearful Kara in the 31st century to make her life’s worth in Legion Academy before returning to the 21st century to continue his duty as a superhero in Metropolis. Left on her own, Kara takes on the mantle of Supergirl in honor of her cousin as a new student in Legion Academy, where, with the help of a variety of her ragtag classmates (consisting of White Witch, Lamprey, Timber Wolf, Cosmic Boy, Dawnstar, Spider Girl, Lightning Lad, Blok, Chameleon Boy, Matter-Eater Lad, Brainiac 5, Tyroc, Triplicate Girl, Shadow Lass, Element Lad, Phantom Girl, Sun Boy, Bouncing Boy, and Saturn Girl), she must now find her place in the future and become the superhero she always meant to be.
