Premise[]

The Huntsman and Huntsgirl in the sixth and final season.

Set in the New York City borough of Manhattan, this animated series tells the story of a American Mike Logan (voiced by Jason Griffith) and his young buddy American Kyle Parker (voiced by Tara Strong), who must balance ordinary adolescence with the ability to change into a dragon. When they eventually unlocks his full potential and turns into the American Dragons, he has to overcome obstacles to protect the magical creatures living in the city, but as his ordinary self, Mike and Kyle has issues with his deep crush on their schoolmates Tina (Ashley Johnson) and Lizzie (Kari Wahlgren) who, unbeknownst to Mike and Kyle, has a dark, magical secret of her own: she is a natural dragon-slayer known as the Huntsgirls, a member of the Huntsclan, a cult of ninjas that slays mythical creatures and who Jake has fought consistently. The leader of the Huntsclan is Slade Grimm the Huntsman (Maurice LaMarche) who raised Tina and Lizzie.

Mike and Kyle navigates the city with his six best friends – Thelma Masterson (Grey DeLisle), Cory Harrison (Khary Payton), Otto Diaz (Wayne Grayson), Ramon Huxtable (Jeffrey Garcia), Abigail Torpedos (Crystal Scales) and Louie D. Wazowski (Benjamin Diskin). When Mike and Kyle gets home, it is to an extended family who all live together: Mike, his sister, their parents, and Mike's maternal grandfather Chang Wong (Keone Young). Dennis (Kyle MacLachlan), a businessman dad originally from the Midwest, is unaware that he is married into a family of dragons from his Chinese wife Gracie (Jill Taley) (who lacks any dragon abilities, which skipped her generation). Chang Wong trains Mike and Kyle in the magical, mystical ways of the dragons. Mike also cares very deeply for his annoying, overachieving, and seemingly perfect younger sister Rebecca (Carolyn Lawrence) (a nascent dragon), despite feeling like he's stuck in her small shadow. Kyle Parker's parents Jasper (Jeff Bennett), a businessman dad originally from the Midwest, is unware that he is marred into a family of dragons from his wife Elizabeth (Beth Littleford), Kyle's big teenage sister Anna Parker (Veronica Taylor) (a thylacine guardian), and Kyle's talking pet white duck named Wally (Carlos Alazraqui), Grandpa's cynical sidekick Grandpa's cynical sidekick, a magical talking Pitbull named Kai Dog (John DiMaggio), is Mike's animal guardian and other best friend, and Grandpa's animal assistants, a magical talking hawk named Juan Hawk (Timothy Stack) and a talking platypus named Ryu Platypus (Cory Feldman) are Mike and Kyle's animal guardians and other best friends.

Characters[]

Main[]

  • Michael Dupain "Mike" Logan (Jason Griffith): a Chinese-American 13-year-old (14 years old in the second season) who is half-human, half-dragon. He is the titular American Dragon. His personality is that of a cool, laid-back skateboarder who talks in rapper slang. He has a keen awareness of the newest developments and styles, is self-assured, and likes video games, extreme sports, all sorts of music, and the occasional comic book. He had a crush on pretty blonde schoolmate Tina until he found out she was actually the Huntsgirl, but their dual identities are bound to stir up trouble. After numerous trials and tribulations over the course of the series, Mike and Rebecca finally get together in the final episode. A running gag involves the mention of his embarrassing secrets like having a teddy bear collection and sleeping with a nightlight to blemish his reputation. His dragon abilities include flight, fire breath, a prehensile tail, and sharp claws, along with highly strong senses.
  • Kyle Issac Parker (Tara Strong): a 8-year-old sidekick friend of Mike Logan who is half-human, half-dragon. Mike's energetic, eager-to-please sidekick. He transforms into the fiery, but incredibly fast Red Dragon. His innocence is a foil to Mike's teenage angst. He has a crush on Lizzie.
  • Qiang Chang Wong (Keone Young): Mike and Kyle's grandpa who was formerly the Chinese Dragon. He runs an electronic shop on Wind Dancer Street with the slogan "Never have a customer, never have a sale" alongside his only friend Kai Dog. His attempts at training Mike and Kyle sometimes do more damage (to Mike and Kyle's brain) than help. His name is a reference to the Chinese word for "teacher." In his youth in 1972, before his first encounter with the Dark Dragon, Jake's grandpa was known as Lucky Lao Shi.
  • Kai Dog (John DiMaggio): a 600-year-old Pitbull and Chang Wong's only companion. Throughout his entire life, he and a hairless talking cat have fought over Kai's family amulet (causing famous disasters along the way). He is more "hip" than Chang Wong.
  • Wally Duck (Carlos Alazraqui): Kyle's talking pet white duck. Sarcastic, lazy, and often provides cynical commentary on Mike's love life and dragon-related missions.
  • Juan Hawk (Timothy Stack): Grandpa's magical talking hawk. A cynical and world-weary sidekick who aids in reconnaissance and magical advice.
  • Ryu Platypus (Cory Feldman): A talking platypus and friend to Kyle. Calm and highly skilled in various martial arts, serving as an animal guardian and other best friend.
  • Louie D. "Lou" Wazowski (Benjamin Diskin): Mike's best friend, who is extremely loyal and somewhat slow. However, he comes up with intelligent things to say at random times. He also has the entire works of Shakespeare committed to memory. There is a chance that Lou is half-wizard (this is hinted when his grandfather happens to know the magic word to seal a Rukuno back into a goblet). He also has a crush on the head cheerleader, Stacey, who hates him until they start dating near the end of the second season.
  • Thelma Masterson (Grey DeLisle): Mike's other best friend, who is just as cool as he is. A witty, blunt, and sharp-tongued girl, a hardcore fashionista but also the most logical and mature of the group.
  • Otto Diaz (Wayne Grayson): Kyle's best friend, who is a quirky, highly enthusiastic friend, often into bizarre conspiracy theories.
  • Ramon Huxtable (Jeffrey Garcia): Kyle's other best friend, who is a c funny, energetic friend, often serving as the comic relief among the group.
  • Cory Harrison (Khary Payton): Mike's closest male friend. Chill, focused on music, and Mike's confidante for non-dragon related drama.
  • Abigail Torpedoes (Crystal Scales): Mike's closest friend, Who is a sarcastic, intelligent friend, often playing the 'straight man' to the other friends' antics.
  • Rebecca Emmy Logan (Carolyn Lawrence): Mike's seven-year-old intelligent, talented, over-achieving, but annoying little sister who also has dragon powers. She takes pride in her ability to expose all of Mike's secrets and highlight her own. But despite all of that, she admires Mike's bravery, selflessness and ability as the American Dragon and sees him as a role model. It is hinted multiple times in the show that all her effort to be better than her brother is so she can impress him and get him to think of her as an equal. She knows that Mike would do anything for her, including forgetting all the problems she's ever caused between them, if it meant her safety. She wants to talk and hang out with him more.
  • Anna Parker (Veronica Taylor): Kyle's sixteen-year oldintelligent, talented, over-achieving, Kyle's older sister. She is a thylacine guardian (an extinct animal protector) and helps look after Kyle. She is often seen as the cool, responsible teen.
  • Gracie Logan (Jill Taley): Mike and Rebecca's mother does not possess any natural dragon abilities like her family and children, having skipped her generation. She does all she can to keep her human husband Jonathan from discovering the existence of magic and her family being magical creatures.
  • Dennis Logan (Kyle MacLachlan): Mike and Rebecca's mortal father, and a businessman originally from the Midwest, who is unaware that he is married into a family of dragons. In the series finale, he is initially shocked at his wife's family secret but later comes to welcome it as he always knew there was something magical about them.
  • Elizabeth Parker (Beth Littleford): Kyle and Anna's mother. She skipped the dragon generation but is fully aware of the magical world. She is supportive and runs a tight ship at home.
  • Jasper Parker (Jeff Bennett): Kyle and Anna's business-minded, Midwest-born father. He is the only one in the extended family completely unaware of the dragon secret, leading to many comedic misinterpretations.
  • Tina/Huntsgirl (Ashley Johnson): Mike's love interest (later girlfriend in the series finale) and a natural dragon slayer known as the Huntsgirl, a member of the Huntsclan that slays magical creatures, especially dragons. She was born with a red birthmark on her arm resembling a Chinese dragon, leading the Huntsclan to kidnap her from her parents. She also has an identical twin sister whose fate is unknown.
  • Lizzie/Reaper Girl (Kari Wahlgren): Lizzie's love interest (later girlfriend in the series finale) and a natural dragon slayer known as the Reaper Girl, a member of the Huntsclan that slays magical creatures, especially dragons. She was born with a red birthmark on her arm resembling a Chinese dragon, leading the Huntsclan to kidnap her from her parents. She also has an identical twin sister whose fate is unknown.
  • Professor Hans Rotwood (Paul Rugg): is Jake's 57-year-old German schoolteacher with an obsessive interest in magical creatures, and a quest to discover the American Dragon's identity (oblivious to the fact that it is Jake). Professor Rotwood styles himself as an expert on mythical creatures, but his knowledge is superficial and his expertise a fraud.

Main villains[]

  • Slade Grimm the Huntsman (Maurice LaMarche): The leader of the Huntsclan, a society of thieves that hunt and steal magical creatures for profit. They are highly trained and use sophisticated weapons. Huntsclan members have a specific birthmark that resembles a dragon. His true name and face were never shown. The Huntsman is #4 of the 13 threats to the magic community. In the second season, his outfit is redesigned as magenta and he sports a ninja mask and a dragon skull helmet. His face is finally revealed when his helmet is destroyed, and is ultimately killed by his protegee Tina and Lizzie.
  • The Dark Dragon (Clancy Brown), the secondary main antagonist of the show. He became the new villain after Slade Grimm the Huntsman's death in the episode "Homecoming"
  • Blackberry B (Adam Wylie): A weasel with a rapper style and Mike's temporary animal guardian who later betrayed him to become Councilor Chang's assistant. He talks with an Australian accent.
  • Councilor Hauna (Beth Littleford): A former member of the Dragon Council and the Dark Dragon's assistant who has teamed up with Chang Wong back when he first fought the Dark Dragon

Production[]

Dragon Brothers: Mike Logan and Kyle Parker was created by Jeff Goode (who also wrote the pilot for MTV's Undressed). The show was pitched to Disney Channel executives as an animated show in 2002. After being greenlit by Disney Channel, the pitch bible was then developed into its television adaptation with executive producers Matt Negrete (previously a writer on Fillmore!) and Eddie Guzelian (a writer and story editor for Kim Possible), with Christian Roman serving as director.

Nickelodeon ordered an initial twenty-one 30-minute episodes the first season. The series premiered on January 21, 2003. It was initially scheduled for the fall of 2002, but was moved to January when The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius was completed in time for its September debut.

The theme song was originally performed for the first season by the band Mavin.

In 2006 Nickelodeon renewed the show for a second season. It had also been announced that Steve Loter, who had served as director of Kim Possible, would join the show for its second season as director and executive producer alongside Matt Negrete and Eddie Guzelian. However, following Nickelodeon's renewal of Nathan Spacewalker for a fourth season, Loter would resume his role as the director but still serve as an executive producer of Mike Logan and Kyle Parker. Nick Filippi, who had also done directorial work on Nathan Spacewalker, was assigned as the new director of Mike Logan and Kyle Parker. With Steve Loter joining the staff, the show had all of its characters and backgrounds re-designed with new animation upon request by both Loter and the executives as they had disdain for the previous seasons' designs.

The theme song for season 2 was also re-recorded by The Jonas Brothers.

The show ended its run on September 1, 2009.

After the show ended, reruns continued to air on Nickelodeon's late-night lineup every night at 1:30am. The show was brought back to the daytime lineup weekdays at 2:00pm from October 1–5, 2009, and 1:00pm from October 9, 2009, to May 15, 2010. The show's late-night timeslot was moved to 2:30am on May 17, 2010, and to 3:00am on January 1, 2010. On May 7, 2011, the show started airing only 4 nights a week (Monday-Thursday), and the show was completely removed from Nickelodeon after June 25, 2011.

The series was syndicated to Nicktoons from February 20, 2006, to February 12, 2010. When Toon Disney was converted to Disney XD, the series was carried over and aired from February 14, 2010, to October 15, 2014.

Crossover with Danny Phantom[]

Mike Logan and Kyle Parker and his allies come to Amity Park in an episode of Danny Phantom entitled "Dragon Phantom Force" to investigate one of Jack's experiments, while Danny enters a skateboarding competition in an attempt to impress her crush by winning a new skateboard for him while he's in Australia. Meanwhile, he, Mike and Kyle team up to stop Skuller and rescue the experiment.
