Season 1: Arrival of the Toa[]

Episode Number (Season) Episode Number (Series) Episode Title
1 1 Arrival
Above a vast ocean on an unknown planet, six comets breach the atmosphere, and from each falls a canister which lands in the ocean and drifts to a mysterious island. One of the canisters arrives on a beach, where a flock of birds investigate before the canister explodes open and releases a large amount of mechanical pieces, which slowly begin to assemble themselves, organic components forming around them as they combine into a hunched figure. This creature, appearing to be in a state of delirium, recovers his final piece, a mask, which when placed over his face energises him and causes his previously grey body to turn black and grey. The being muses over his surroundings, finding himself stricken with amnesia, and begins to wander around the beach. After he comes across a bird trapped in mud, he discovers his ability to telekinetically control the earth when he uses this power to make the mud shift and free the bird, then recreate his mask in the side of a cliff. As he reminisces over this experience, he is finally able to remember something: his own name, Onua. With his morale restored, Onua continues to make his way inland, seeking answers.
2 2 Winds
In a jungle located on the other side of the island, Lewa, a being similar to Onua, is wandering the jungle after reassembling himself from a similar canister. Initially simply enjoying himself swinging from vines, he soon begins assisting local fauna in aid, such as helping an infant bird back to its nest, discovering his power to control the wind in the process. Later, he witnesses a large quadrupedal beast with a scarred mask attacking a small being with a similar build to him, and comes to the assistance of the smaller one. After knocking the creature's mask off, it returns to a docile state, and the smaller creature, introducing himself as Kongu, excitedly identifies Lewa as a Toa, and offers to take him to Turaga Matau, leader of his Matoran village of Le-Koro, for answers. Lewa admits that he can only remember, aside from his name and that he arrived in a canister, that he has arrived on the island to fight a great evil, and agrees to follow Kongu to Le-Koro. Meanwhile, to the north of the island, another canister washes up on the shores of a icy tundra, with the Toa emerging recalling his name as Kopaka. Reassembling himself, he begins to follow a running river along the tundra in the hopes of finding civilisation.
3 3 Flames
On another of the island's beaches, the fourth Toa, Tahu, emerges and reassembles himself, wandering the beach and learning of his power to control fire before coming across a Matoran who is also suffering amnesia, only remembering his name of Takua. Believing their paths may be connected, Tahu and Takua agree to travel together. After they go inland, they engage a gigantic crab-like creature in a burnt forest, which they manage to defeat after Tahu discovers his mask's ability to generate a shield that protects him and is able to distract the creature for Takua to knock its mask off via toppling a tree onto it. Following this victory, a tribe of armed Matoran surround them and attempt to intimidate them with their trapping skills, but after Tahu comes to Takua's defence, the village's Turaga, Vakama, comes to stop the fight, revealing Tahu as a Toa to the Matoran, who apologise and bow before him.
4 4 Legend
Onua is seen digging through an underground cavern, eventually emerging in a underground village, Onu-Koro, where he sees a statue of himself, confusing him. He meets a Matoran named Onepu, who leads him to the village's Turaga, Whenua, who begins explaining the story of Mata Nui. It is said that Mata Nui, the Great Spirit and creator of the island and its inhabitants, led the Matoran down from the heavens to the island, which was named in his honour. Mata Nui's jealous "brother", Makuta, struck down the Great Spirit, sending him into a deep slumber, but not before he was able to send a legend of that warriors known as Toa would arrive to save the island from Makuta and his minions, including animals known as Rahi who are controlled by infected masks. Onua, acknowledging the story, admits that he is only just beginning to understand.
5 5 Heroes
Kopaka, continuing to wander around the mountainous region of Ko-Wahi, has met a Matoran named Matoro, who became lost in the drifts and intends to lead Kopaka back to his village of Ko-Koro to meet Turaga Nuju. During their trek, they are ambushed by Rahi, who knock Matoro over a cliff edge. Kopaka manages to save the Matoran and escape the Rahi via a frozen river which leads them back to Ko-Koro, where they meet Nuju, who speaks in another language that Matoro is able to translate. Nuju explains to Kopaka his quest, to gather powered Kanohi masks to gain the power to battle Makuta. After being told to look for a "place of far-seeing", Kopaka agrees to begin his journey. Meanwhile, in the desert region of Po-Wahi, the fifth canister arrives on the shore, and a Toa named Pohatu emerges, reassembling himself and soon discovering his mask's power of super speed. He begins entertaining himself speeding around the desert and playing with the birds, while a mysterious figure watches him from the shade.
6 6 Seas
Around the primarily aquatic region of Ga-Wahi, the final (and only female) Toa, Gali, reassembles herself and begins to explore her surroundings using her mask's power to grant her amphibiousness. She eventually meets a Matoran named Macku, who takes her to the floating village of Ga-Koro to meet Turaga Nokama to have her purpose explained. When the village comes under attack by a Rahi known as a Tarakava, Gali successfully defeats the creature and saves a drowning Matoran named Hahli, learning of her powers to control water as she does so. Nokama congratulates her and awards her with a ceremonial copper mask, telling her of the powered Kanohi masks scattered around the island. Gali agrees to locate the masks to help battle the Makuta, and becomes intrigued when Nokama mentions the possibility of multiple Toa on the island of Mata Nui.
7 7 Meeting
On his search for the mysterious "place of far-seeing", Kopaka meets Pohatu after the latter accidentally buries the former in a avalanche. While Pohatu insists on that they should work together, Kopaka refuses to accompany him, believing that he will be better alone. However, after a battle against several Rahi that the two are forced to work together to fight, Kopaka reluctantly agrees to unite with Pohatu and find the Kanohi together. Meanwhile, Gali, swimming up a river in Le-Wahi, meets Onua and offers to accompany him in finding the Kanohi. In Ta-Koro, Vakama explains the legend of Mata Nui to Tahu while Takua has information on the world re-explained to him by Jaller, the leader of the Ta-Koro Guard. Meanwhile, Lewa and Kongu arrive at Le-Koro to find it deserted, and after searching are able to find a single remaining Matoran, Tamaru, who tells them that Matau and all the Le-Matoran have been captured.
8 8 Teamwork
As Kopaka and Pohatu continue their search for the "place of far-seeing", Kopaka gradually warms up to the Toa of Stone. Pohatu helps Kopaka scale Mount Ihu, where they find Kopaka's first Kanohi mask - a Huna, Mask of Invisibility. Kopaka learns of his main mask's power of enhanced vision when he uses it to peruse the mountains and spots Onua and Gali. Pohatu takes him back down the mountain to meet them, having another encounter with Rahi along the way. In Ta-Wahi, Tahu meets Lewa and after some discussion agrees to go to Le-Wahi to try and find the other Toa, encountering more Rahi along the way. Onua and Gali defend themselves from Rahi as they continue to investigate the jungle further, and soon meet Tahu and Lewa, introducing themselves as Kopaka and Pohatu arrive, uniting the six Toa.
9 9 Alliance
The united Toa begin to talk about their objectives and goals, with Tahu taking on a leader role and insisting that they work as a team. While Kopaka and Lewa argue that they would be better off working alone, Onua and Pohatu agree with Tahu while Gali attempts to negotiate between the two sides. Ultimately, Kopaka and Lewa leave, making Tahu angry. Agreeing upon trying to find additional Kanohi for each of them, the four Toa begin searching for the Kanohi. Following a cry for help emanating from a cavern, they discover Onu-Kini, a temple dedicated to Onua, within which Rahi known as Nui-Rama has dragged a Onu-Matoran named Nuparu. While Tahu, Gali and Pohatu fight against the rest of the hive, Onua enters the temple to rescue Nuparu. After he saves Nuparu and removes the Nui-Rama's infected masks, the shrine at the temple activates and rewards him with a Hau, Mask of Shielding, similar to Tahu's own mask. Now properly understanding the potential of the masks, Onua suggests that they locate the other temples around the island for each of the other Toa. In Le-Wahi, Lewa rescues Kongu from Rahi and escorts him to safety in Le-Kini, where the shrine awards him with a Pakari, Mask of Strength, similar to Onua's mask.
10 10 Adventure
After being told some information about his past by Vakama, Takua wanders out of Ta-Koro and comes across a Ta-Matoran named Kapura, who is moving very slowly and when asked claims to be "practising". At a direction from Kapura, Takua takes a transport to Po-Koro, along the way meeting a narcissistic but good-natured carver named Hafu, who mentions that the Kolhii matches of Po-Koro have been postponed due to a mysterious illness. The duo go to Po-Koro, where they meet the village's Turaga, Onewa, who is busy carving beds for the sick. After briefly playing Kolhii, the national sport of Po-Koro, with the Quarry Master Epena, Takua goes to visit Hewkii, the champion Kolhii player and friend of Pohatu, who is ill with the disease that has stricken Po-Koro. After taking a specialised Kolhii ball from Hewkii's hut, Takua takes it to Onewa, who realises that it is infected in the same way as the masks of the Rahi, and tells Takua to find evidence of the infection from their vendor, Ahkmou, who is secretly in alliance with Makuta. While Ahkmou is distracted, Takua steals a key from him that leads to the Po-Koro Quarry, where he believes the balls are being created.
11 11 Duo
Entering the Po-Koro Quarry, Takua finds the stockpile of infected Kolhii balls, and is attacked by a Nui-Jaga, a giant scorpion-like Rahi. Pohatu, who has been searching for Po-Kini, arrives and saves him, but is temporarily blinded by a attack by the Rahi. Takua helps use verbal directions to guide Pohatu's kicks to bring down the nest, his sight returning as he uses his mask to speed him and Takua out of the collapsing cave. Returning to Po-Koro, the Po-Matoran dispose of the infected balls as Ahkmou disappears, and Onewa rewards Takua with a chisel. Instructed to deliver it to Turaga Nokama, Takua becomes distracted by a shortcut to Onu-Koro and follows the trail there, where he meets a miner named Taipu, who has been shunted Onepu's mining duties as the latter helps train the Ussalry, Onu-Koro's defensive force. Using his ingenuity, Takua is able to help unblock a path to Le-Wahi, where Taipu excitedly wanders around and is soon captured by a Nui-Rama, leading Takua to head to Le-Koro to try and get help. In the Nui-Rama nest in Le-Wahi, Lewa, searching for the missing Le-Matoran and Turaga Matau, finds a new mask - the Komau, the Mask of Mind Control, similar to Onewa's mask. He then sees Matau and the Le-Matoran in a cage, who attempt to warn him, but Lewa is surprise-attacked by a Nui-Rama and his mask is knocked off.
12 12 Battle
Kopaka, wandering towards Le-Wahi, finds Kapura, who claims to have arrived by "moving very fast by moving very slow" and leads him to Le-Koro, where he finds that Tahu, Gali, Onua and Pohatu have also arrived, having come to locate Lewa to try and argue for the importance of the Toa working together. When Takua arrives and explains Taipu's kidnapping, Tahu finds a discarded flute and plays it, summoning the remaining free Le-Matoran, including Gukko Force leader Kongu and Rahi tender Tamaru, who reveal that the other Le-Matoran and Turaga Matau are in the Nui-Rama hive. As more Nui-Rama prepare a final attack on Le-Koro, the Toa and Matoran band together and ride the Gukko Force's birds to mount their own assault on the Nui-Rama hive. During the battle, the five Toa show the usage of teamwork when they each combine their powers and masks to effectively fight the hoard of Nui-Rama. They eventually arrived in the Nui-Rama hive, where the path to the captured Le-Matoran is blocked by a miniature tornado. Matau, who was able to escape via his own air powers, reveals that even Lewa has fallen under the infected masks of Makuta, which is shown as the controlled Lewa arrives, engaging the other five Toa.
13 13 Unity
The five free Toa battle against the infected Lewa as Matau provides assistance to Takua and the Gukko Force. During the battle, Lewa is briefly returned to his senses after impact with Tahu and Onua's Mask shields, speaking of his mask before returning to Makuta's control. Onua, having found a Mahiki, Mask of Telekinesis, on his way to Le-Koro, is able to form a distraction for long enough for the other Toa to force off Lewa's mask. Lewa, freed from Makuta's mind control, uses his Komau to control the Nui-Rama and make them transport everyone back to Le-Koro, where they celebrate. That evening, the Toa meet again under the Mangaia volcano, located at the centre of Mata Nui, where they discuss the events of their first days on Mata Nui and the Kanohi masks. Sensing them beneath the Mangaia, Makuta makes the volcano erupt, following with a earthquake, blizzard, mudslide, tsunami and cyclone. The Toa combine their elemental powers to stop these disasters, and after defeating yet another Rahi attack, the Toa officially declare that they will, from this moment forward, work as a team to find the Kanohi masks and defeat Makuta.
